Attendance

Regular student attendance is a vital part of every child’s education.  Because of the importance that daily attendance plays in the educational process of every child, the Department of Education and the schools of the Commonwealth are obligated to comply with state and federal requirements for student attendance and truancy.  In response to this mandate by the Department of Education, Cumberland Valley monitors student attendance closely. When a student is absent from school parents/guardians have three school days to return an excuse form to the school.  Failure to do so will move this possible lawful absence to an unlawful/truant absence.  It is very important that parents/guardians return an excuse to school within three days to avoid the absences(s) becoming unlawful/truant.  This procedure remains the same grades K-12.  When a student has accumulated three unlawful/truant absences, the parent will receive a reminder from the district stating the number of unlawful absences and could be required to participate in a School Attendance Improvement Plan (SAIP) to resolve truant behavior.  Any future unlawful/truant absences will result in an attendance citation being filed with the District Justice.  As part of this policy, disapproved educational trips and unplanned vacations during the school year will be counted as unlawful absences from school.

Absentee Notes

When a student is absent from school for any reason, a note must be turned into the office within three (3) days of the student’s return to school. Absences shall be treated as unlawful/unexcused until the district receives a written excuse explaining the absence. Absence notes may be submitted via Skyward or in writing. A scanned absence note containing a parent signature, date(s) absent, reason for absence may be emailed to [email protected] and [email protected]

Late Arrivals

  • For all students arriving at school after 9:10am, parents/guardians are required to:
Scan the “Late Arrival” QR code on the entrance door.
Provide a written excuse to the office.

Excessive tardiness will result in a conference with the principal.

Educational Trip Policy

A student will be permitted to take no more than two (2) educational trips per school year, not to exceed a total of five (5) school days.  The Educational Trip Request form can be found on the Silver Spring webpage under the Office Forms tab. Please complete and return to the SS Office at least five (5) days prior to the requested trip date.  Neglecting to gain proper approval will result in those days being recorded as unlawful.

Early Dismissal - District Wide

Occasionally, due to inclement weather, the district will call an “Early Dismissal”.  Typically, the AM Kindergarten students will go home at the normal time. There usually will be no PM Kindergarten.  It is very important to check the website and watch for an E-News with details for an early dismissal.
